I was drawn to painting this Chrysanthemum due to the hypnotic movement that can be found throughout the image in the striations of the petals. Oil paint allows me to dramatise this, through intense detailing and a full spectrum of tones. Despite having a visual dynamism the image is also delicate, with a calm uniformity.
I am interested in the balance between figuration and abstraction in the world around us. Recently, I have been painting still life and daily scenes using a restricted palette and intimate scale, which persuades the viewer to look beyond the motif and become immersed in the form. The viewer's initial recognition of the subject matter bleeds away as the abstractions within the image act as a catalyst to broaden the viewer's insights, like Wittgenstein’s ladder.
