I've come back to the sweet shop for my latest pop art food painting. It depicts the packaging of classic British sweets called Chewits. I've gone for the eye-poppingly colourful blackcurrant flavour packet with it's fluorescent green 'only 10p' side graphic.
Sweets packaging has always been very eye-catching and well designed. It perfectly depicts what you'd be getting inside and was primed to capture the eyes of young kids like me. The modern day packaging looks different from this but I chose the original 80s style design as I thought it had a more graphic impact. It's also pretty shocking that they used to be only 10p!
As ever with many of my works the design goes around the edge and the shape of the canvas mimics the actual shape of the object - so it's like an actual art object as well as a painting of it. This one is particularly thick at 3.5cm, so you even get the flavour written on the bottom edge and a approximation of a barcode on the top.
It's a bold bright painting that would brighten up any room in your home, or would make an ideal gift for someone with a sweet tooth.
It is painted in acrylics and Posca paint pens on a stretched cotton canvas. It's signed and dated on the back frame, as depicted.
