Fall is such a beautiful time of year to enjoy outdoors, and I particularly love to see the chamisas, a flowering shrub native to the American Southwest which produces clusters of golden yellow blooms. Since this is a short-lived opportunity, I try to take advantage of painting this showy display of color before it disappears. I wanted to capture the intense colors as the sun played off the landscape, highlighting the various shades of green and yellow surrounded by walls of sandy soil.
"Chamisas in the Arroyo Gigante" was painted "en plein air", or outdoors, and is an oil on Ampersand flat panel. I used palette knives and silicon painting tools rather than brushes, giving the surface texture from the marks of the knives.
