These little birds are the original separators of wheat from chaff (hence the name!)
Where as a robin might sit on the end of your spade, hoping you unearth some succulent worms, the chaffinch frequented the domains of farmers at harvest time. During the winnowing of freshly threshed wheat, the chaffinches would diligently sift through the piles of chaff, looking for forgotten grain.
I've wanted to immortalise one of these for a long time as they are a happy splash of blue and rust-red every time you spot them, which isn't hard as their tiny lungs can really pump out a hell of a chorus.
This acrylic painting on board is lifted into the realms of the slightly psychedelic by some lovely marbling.
