I recently re-read the story of David and Bathsheba, which always leads to fruitful reflection. I focused on the fact that the impulse to sin arises from our disordered human nature, and the sin itself then creates disorder in our lives (or in our society, if you expand the reflection) in the consequences of that action. So disorder is both the cause and the effect. David's sin of adultery and murder led to an act of rape amongst his children, and then the murder of one son by another, followed by the rebellion and eventual death of Absalom, and the division of David's kingdom. Since sin afflicts us all, we would be without hope, except for God's infinite love and mercy. After all, God forgave David, as He forgives all who repent. And we must remember that Jesus--who won the everlasting victory over sin and death on the Cross--was a descendent of David's. All who believe in Him share in His victory, so that sin need never have the final word!
I have expressed the theme of disorder through the repeating forms of this composition, and the limited, earth-toned palette, which is offset by vivid, repentant purple. The image continues on all sides, which are gallery wrapped, which means that the painting can be hung without a frame, if the client wishes. Hanging hardware is already installed, and a satin varnish has been applied for protection.
