In the series En majesté Nicolas Maureau revisits the royal portrait.
He draws inspiration for this interpretation of Queen Catherine de Medici from half-body portraits of the Renaissance.
Catherine is represented as a widow holding a red scarf, a code borrowed from bullfighting as a sign of death, in reference to the black legend of the queen which makes her one of the instigators of the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre.
