In reality a small oil on linen canvas depicting a section of the Grand Canal, Venice. Delicately detailed yet still retaining some fluid and impressionistic brushwork.

So many artists have been inspired to paint the unique vistas of Venice and on a recent trip there I came across the paintings of an Italian artist. In my opinion the watercolours by Alberto Prosdocimi, 1852 - 1925 are truly magical and certainly inspiring. His portrayals of the city definitely capture the light and atmosphere of the city and in a time before the plethora of modern canal traffic. I have based this preliminary oil sketch on one of his watercolours of the Grand Canal. There will be more and larger canvases too!
