This is an outdoor (“plein air”) work created in Bassano in the Le Marché region of Italy. Bassano is a beautiful little cluster of houses close to the town of Fabriano which is famous for the production of watercolour paper. This painting is, of course, painted on Fabriano paper and I have used Windsor and Newton paints.
I was attracted to this house, just a short walking distance from my accommodation, as a painting subject because of its typical southern European architecture and the suggestion that its elevated position affords a great view. Of course the owners couldn´t understand why I was painting the house rather than the view so later I was invited for coffee on the terrace and to admire the garden full of “rosmarino” and, of course, the panoramic view to the mountains. I did, of course, paint the mountains many times too!
“Casa Bella Vista” was painted on site, standing on the edge of a somewhat lizard-infested dry, ploughed field. I have left the foreground very light to depict that powder dry, almost white soil, and beyond it are the fresh greens of a field of herbs. Some of the trees around the house are already tinged with yellow as it was late in the summer.
This painting is one of a series of Italian paintings of the lesser known Le Marché region. It is sold mounted and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
