Original artwork description:

This oil painting features the city of Carcassonne, listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It's located in the south of France, in the department of Aude, on a rocky outcrop dominating the Aude river and on the historic axis of communication linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. It is an outstanding example of a fortified medieval city with an enormous defensive system developed mainly in the 13th century. This painting was realised on a linen canvas over a period of several months owing to the drying times between layers. As studies for this work I used several sketches and watercolours I had made in-situ in the vineyards along the road to Limoux. In the background you can see the Caroux mountain range and in the foreground vineyards. The watecolour studies for this oil were made in early autumn, after the harvest period, at the time when the grapevines start changing colours. This work is ready to hang. The photos with a frame are for reference only but this work can be framed on request.

Materials used:

extra fine oil pigments on a linen canvas
