Caligula en Mercure is the first work in the “En Majesté” series. It represents the emperor Caligula taking on the appearance of the god Mercury to rise to the rank of divinity during his lifetime. This desire to be honored as a god is recorded in the dark legend of the Roman Emperor Caligula. The pose adopted by the model refers to ancient imperial statuary. The winged shoes, an attribute of the god Mercury, are also a reference to the emperor's nickname: Caligula means little shoes.
