As I continue with my historical Route 66 sign series I am exploring another American cultural tradition…the diner. Diners a derivative of the “dining car” reflect the styling that manufacturers borrowed from railroad dining cars and have been a prominent part of American culture since the 1800’s.
The Classic American diners often share nostalgic, retro-style features such as an exterior layer of stainless steel and/or ceramic tile siding, neon trim on the structure, a neon sign displaying their name and other small neon features unique to diner architecture.
Whether it be day or night the stainless steel reflects the sky, the landscape and other activities around it therefore creating a different facet of what we see adding interest and another dimension to my painting.
