Original artwork description:

This painting was created circa 2005 and is part of the Eye Series of paintings created around this time. The image is painted using the water-based oil paint that had come out during this time and allowed me to experiment with this medium.

The painting explores a mixture of previous ideas explored during the 1990s using masking tape to created a layered image of lines to form squares of colour. Within the image I also included a resonance to Piet Mondrian utilising his squares of colour, used as a homage to his work and Modernism.

A painting of my eye is contained within the layers of lines and squares, with a key lock reflected in the pupil, exploring our seeking of the key to unlock ourselves from the caged realities we have placed or are placed within through the many choices and diversions experienced in our lives. Hence the painting called CAGED.

An abstracted language is scrawled into the layers of paint during each layering of the colours, acting as a symbol of abstractness with language and its meaning or interpretation - exploring the various ways in which each of us interpret the world and meaning, taking from it our perspective of truth, knowledge, reality etc.

The only truth is that there is no truth - only perspectives from personal point of views. Hence the important of dialogue, debate, discussion and discourses.
