Original artwork description:

“Broomhill Pond 5” is an acrylic painting 70cmsH x 100cmsW x 3cmsD on canvas. The painting continues to develop my interest in reflected light on water and is part of a series of works entitled ‘Water’. Broomhill pond is part of the Broomhill Estate in Muddiford near Barnstaple in North Devon in the U.K. ‘Broomhill Pond 5’ has been developed from a series of photographs taken in July when I visited the estate. The estate lies in a glorious, undulating valley surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodland and bound by its own stream. Broomhill estate is home to a stunning collection of over 200 sculptures set around the gardens. The gardens are in fact dense woodlands with a large pond at the heart of the densely populated boscage. Light filters through the trees and bounces off the glistening pond waters. This painting is quite literal in that the lilies are seen as clearly defined shapes. The view looks into the depth and distance of the pond and focuses on the subtle changes of colour between foreground, middle ground and background. The sparkling light illuminates the waters creating deep shadows against the shimmering highlights. The lilies are in bloom and spatter their colour over the waters. The painting is built in layers of thin washes and dense impasto. I work with brushes, cloths and knives. I am inspired by the work of contemporary artists such as Barbara Rae, modernists such as Gillian Ayres, Howard Hodgkin and John Hoyland and of course the Impressionists. The painting is shipped in a heavy duty, custom card crate.
