Original artwork description:

Painting of spotted woodpecker on concrete. Discovered in a friends garden, the bird had flown into a french window and the pose I found it in expressed the ambitions of its final moment. An experiment in realistically rendering feathers in oil paint, and the use of dry brush.

Painted at the time of the Malaysian Airlines flights as shot down over the Ukraine, it is a symbol of innocent life cut short by human activity.

This work was selected for the ING Discerning Eye 2014 by the Artistic Director of Pallant House Gallery, Simon Martin.

Materials used:

oil paint, cold pressed linseed oil
