Bournemouth Gardens are beautiful tree filled, grade II listed Victorian gardens which follow the River Bourne for 3kms into Bournemouth town centre. The gardens contain a beautiful range of trees which inspired me to create this print.
This is a three block linocut print printed onto somerset cartridge (130gsm) with oil based inks. I've used transparent inks to create this print, which enabled me to make use of the overlap between blocks to create additional colours. I've used a vibrant terracotta, a strong yellow and a teal/blue shade which combine to make an olive green where they overlap. Where all three colours overlap a mid brown is created, and where the blue and terracotta overlap the print has it's darkest brown areas. The planning and design for this print was a complex process which involved careful planning of how the overlaps should work. This is the second in my series of Bournemouth views.
The tradition of linocut is a relief printing method in which pieces of lino are cut away using special carving tools to create a design. The lino block is then inked up using a roller, and printed onto paper either by hand or using a traditional printing press. It's an entirely manual process, so some slight differences in the prints are to be expected. Each of these prints is the result of three separate blocks being carefully carved and printed, each new colour after the previous layer has had several days to dry.
Approx image size: 15" x 11" (37.5 x 27cm)
This print is a perfect fit for a 40 x 50cm frame when mounted.
