'Some berries were crunchy and unripe: they had grown hidden in the lightless depths of the pine forest. Others dissolved to a woolly texture on her tongue. Occasionally she would pick a berry that was neither too sour nor tasteless, and instead tasted sweet, of violets and clouds. Its sharp dark skin was no sharper than it needed to be. By dusk, her lips were stained indigo.'
