The events of last Friday night in Paris, rocked and appalled every single one of us. And many, many thousands of Artists around the world, know that they will have to paint their response to this tragic day.
I don't know how other artists go about "speaking" about an incident or circumstance. I never know ahead of time what my " Speaking" about something that has greatly impacted me, is going to look like.
I blew off what it's on my easel today, because I knew it was time to say something... Having lived in Paris for 15 years, I am more connected to this city than any other city in the world. I was just there several weeks ago, and was meant to return on a 6 am train, Saturday morning, after the Friday night events. Today, I was ready to address it. I didn't think. I didn't plan. I just painted, and so far, this is what I know...
The painting is done primarily in "Blacks and Blues", obviously symbolizing bruises... Unlike most of my faces, this girl's face does not reflect ease, or joy. Her eyes are very dark; casting a sideways glance; suspicion reflected in them. There are shadows around her eyes that give her a look of sadness, fatigue, and uncertainty. The piece is painted with uncharacteristicly aggressive paint strokes; a metaphor for the very aggression we all witnessed last Friday..... There seems a sense of urgency abut the painting. It was painted quickly, and I left most areas of the image feeling unfinished... "Bleu, Paris" includes three groups of houses, which represent the three locations attacked that night. The Eiffel Tower is leaning; as if off balance, or reeling from an impact... The Cafe is pictured with an empty table and chairs; any signs of life are absent. Compared with most of my Brightly Colored, animated pieces, this one is entirely somber.... The canvas is painted around the edges, so it can be hung unframed if that is your preference.
