Each season of the year creates unique colors and light. The winter colors are cool, greyed and often the temperature similar. My plan throughout the series of bird paintings has been to choose and use color either intuitively or literally based on my direct observations during different times of the year. Winter seems to be a challenging season in terms of color value and dullness.
I use wood panels (sometimes canvas). First layer is built with plaster or modeling paste. Acrylic washes are dabbed or poured on the wet plaster/paste. When the surface is dried I manipulate it by sanding and scratching. More layers are added by repeating this process. Oil paint is used for final layer defining shapes referencing birds and nature.
