Blue and especially ultramarine colour always fascinated me. The colour of sky, the sea, it is also one of the three primary colours of pigments in painting and traditional colour theory. In Middle Ages the blue colour started to be associated with holiness, humility and virtue, when Catholic Church dictated that painters in Italy shall paint the Virgin Mary with the new most expensive pigment imported from Asia - ultramarine.
This oil painting may seem totally abstract at first glance, but after a more careful look you will notice that it contains one of my favourite landscape themes - mountains facing the sea. Influences by the power of Mark Rothko’s colour fields (just in much smaller scale here), I again attempted to play on the edge of figurative and abstract.
The artwork is in private collection, but the artist is open for commissions and may repeat the artwork if you really like it.
