This old woman is a 92-year-old Ukrainian who meets Ukrainian soldiers who liberated her village from Russian invaders. She gives the soldiers what she has - apples from her garden. The photo of this woman with kind, penetrating and trusting blue eyes that are watering from old age, with crusty hands that have worked all her life, struck me to the core.
There are such faces and such perspectives that can become symbols and works of art. Only the face and hands holding the apples are placed in cosmic blue - they remind us of eternity, the gifts of our ancestors, the blessing of the foremother who looks at us through time. The power of our ancestors, which we may have forgotten, is always with us at first. Our foremothers are a part of ourselves.
