Original artwork description:

The subject area Officium Ovalis comprises several series of artworks that deal with formal, content-related and iconographic aspects of the oval. This series consists of 8 paintings. It's about playing with perception. Surface phenomena such as color and gloss are contrasted with the complete absorption of light by extremely matt black. Iconographically, one expects a special content in the center of the painting, which is marked by an oval. This expectation is disappointed here and the interest is directed towards the surroundings, which are perceived as more decorative. The series title is intended to open up various associations to interpret the black oval: a hole, crater, abyss, flaw & last but not least an astrophysical phenomenon.

Materials used:

Monotype with gold dispersion, pastel chalk and painting on card.
