There is no denying that the birch is a very Polish tree, even though it occupies ‘only’ 6% of Polish forests. It is it that features in the nostalgic poems of the bardic poets, it is under crosses made of its wood that soldiers fallen in battle lie.
This steadfastness and strength, which helped it follow the receding glacier northwards, has become so engrained in our consciousness that it is difficult to imagine the Polish landscape without it.
