Painted on-site in the artist's neighborhood in Minneapolis. Features an autumn birch tree showing its transition from fall to winter with lemon yellow and yellow-green leaves towards the bottom, golden yellow and orange leaves in the middle, and dry brown leaves and bare branches around the edges. The sky is a brilliant clear blue.
The background shows the birch tree to dramatic effect, with deep, dark shadows showing glimpses of evergreen trees and shrubs, and more autumn foliage and bare branches. The ground is dusted with fallen leaves. Softy textured effects in the background were created with casein paint and glazed over with oil. The texture of the tree's foliage is enhanced with oil paint thickly applied by palette knife. Oil on canvas with painted sides: it is ready to hang and requires no frame, but may be framed if desired.
