Bethlehem, formerly part of the heart of the US steel industry, sits in Eastern Pennsylvania. It was raining hard. Though it was afternoon, the sun was nowhere to be seen; the cloud was low and thick. By a cemetery, up on a hill, well above the rusting furnaces by the river, I looked down; the east-west streets seemed to stretch forever. Wherever they led was shrouded in cloud and rain, with the hills lying in the background, as they did even before Bethlehem was there. The only sound, apart from distant cars, was the relentless tapping of rain.
