In modern Ukrainian culture, the keeper is often described as an ancient goddess — the patroness of the home, a protective spirit, or the personification of motherhood and femininity. Bereginya is often presented as a testimony and symbol of the matriarchy of ancient Ukrainians. In a figurative sense, a keeper is a woman who takes care of the home and family.
Tetiana Cherevan is a Ukrainian artist and human of the world. Born in Cherkasy, Ukraine, Tetiana lives and works in Ukraine and Thailand. "Bereginya" is the guardian deity of the Ukrainian people, a helper to those who live by the principles of truth and honor.
Tetiana says:
Each of us has a female guardian: mother, grandmother, a famous creative person. All people have their protectors, to whom we mentally turn, looking for advice in our work and life path. The heroines of my project are women who have gained their authority by word and deed, by selfless service to their people. They left their mark in arts, politics, medicine, volunteer work, or simple love for their family. Thanks to them we are invincible, our life will not stop.
The work was painted in 2014 at the beginning of Russia's war with Ukraine. She was included in the Women of Berehynia series. This project was shown in the cities of Ukraine: Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kharkiv. In 2021, he was part of a large solo exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Art BCCC in Bangkok. Later in March 2022, the artist painted a portrait of a Ukrainian woman on the wall of Chulalong University in Bangkok.
In 2022, it was presented at the opening of the Ukrainian Gallery Test Gallery in Barcelona.
At the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the work participated in digital format in many exhibitions around the world.
