In Isaiah 61, there is a beautiful passage about the way that all hurt and pain will be exchanged for blessings: ashes will be replaced with beauty, joy instead of mourning and a garment of praise when once was despair. I wanted to celebrate that generous spirit of God in these three paintings because they tell us that we are not the sum of our mistakes, our trauma or any history at all. We are inheritors of a divine kingdom. I thought it was especially apt to use charcoal ashes within the work as well as the earthy undertones and the sky blues.
