With a painting knife, impasto is applied to canvas. Van Gogh used the method in the 19th century. He created swirling, textural paintings using oil paint. Matisse, Cezanne, and Chagall used brushes and knives. Many contemporary artists still use the same method to create expressive paintings. It's a tribute to Leonid Afremov Style.
