Original artwork description:

The latest in my series of pop art food paintings on small 15x15cm canvases is a colourful slice of classic Battenberg cake. It's a sponge cake covered in marzipan and, when cut in cross section, displays a distinctive check pattern alternately coloured pink and yellow.

I used to have Battenberg cake a lot when I was younger so it brings back a lot of nostalgic memories for me, but also when put into a pop art context I realise how amazingly weird and colourful it is for a traditional cake.

I love painting food in a graphic, pop art way so that the items become abstract and pattern-like. I'm less interested in realism, or representing healthy or 'fine-dining' food. Instead I prefer to explore the bright colours and nostalgic memories associated with comfort food, processed food, and sweets.

The end result is a bold, bright, and original painting that would brighten up any home, or be the perfect gift for anyone with a sweet tooth.

My previous customers have also often bought more than one of these smaller canvases as they look great hung together - see the last picture.

It is painted in acrylics on a stretched cotton canvas that's ready to hang.
