Bastet is an Egyptian deity belonging to the religion of ancient Egypt, revered as early as the 2nd dynasty (2890 BC. With the name of Bast, she was originally the goddess of war in Lower Egypt, the Nile delta region, before unification of the cultures of Egypt (ie up to about 3100 BC; over the centuries it was represented as a cat, assuming mild and protective characteristics. Its name can also be translated as Baast, Ubaste and Baset. In Greek mythology it was also known as Ailuros (from the Greek áilouros, cat), she was one of the most important and revered deities of Ancient Egypt, goddess of the house, of cats, of women, of fertility and of birth.
