Original artwork description:

From my TROPICAL COLLECTION 2023.

The banana leaves blowing in the wind represent freedom for me, it is a loose, abstracted study of banana leaves that I fell in love with painting in 2023, when I was making the departure from uniquely working in abstract style.

It is one of a series of studies I painted at this time as my style was developing, and it is my favourite of the banana leaf studies I did in the summer of 2023, as I love the oranges and blues and unique subtle tones, and free mark making, giving energy to the piece.

The looseness of the leaves was the emphasis for me, and a exploration of subtle colour combinations, along with bold mark making adding textures to the fronds and leaves, hinting at movement.

A mixture of techniques and mediums really helped with this, as thinner washes was added to the leaves and then gestural marks added over, and some scraping with a silicon spatula revealing interesting textures and colours underneath added to the broken nature of banana leaves.

Finally, a rich deep orange wash was applied to the canvas around the leaves, I prefer painting the background last as the white canvas really glows better when I'm painting the leaves, I don't like too many layers of paint, so there is a similarity to watercolour technique in this way.

Inspired by my travels over the years and recent visits to Tropical Glasshouses in some beautiful Botanical Gardens around the UK.
