Delicate and atmospheric, this subtle etching transports you to a place of peace and tranquility.
Inspired by gently swaying forests of bamboo, this limited edition etching invites you to wander thoughtfully into the distance, finding your pathway through. The loose and flowing vertical lines are reminiscent of the bamboo stalks. The lines are thin and delicate, varying in thickness and intensity, giving the impression of movement and rhythm. The black lines contrast with the white background, creating a striking visual effect that draws the eye to the intricate details of the image.
A variety of techniques have been used to create a sense of depth and texture in the etching. Some lines are etched more deeply, creating a shadow effect that adds dimensionality to the image. Other lines are lighter and more ephemeral, suggesting the lightness and delicacy of bamboo leaves rustling in the breeze.
This etching captures the essence of bamboo in a simple yet powerful way. Its minimalist style and monochromatic palette makes it a timeless piece that would complement any interior decor.
To create this etching, the zinc plate was created in two main stages. After putting an aquatint on the plate, the top and bottom of the plate were dipped into acid, a process called 'creeping bite' to allow for the graduated darkening at the top and bottom of the printed paper. Secondly, a wax 'hard ground' was rolled over the plate, with the vertical marks of the bamboo created within the wax.
The zinc plate is dropped into acid at each stage in order to 'burn' pitts into the surface, which then pick up the printing ink when it is smeared onto the plate and selectively removed. The image is created by placing the inked plate onto the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper, on top. The press is then 'hand wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper.
A limited edition print of just 25. As each etching is individually created, there will be slight variations, making each one unique.
