Technique–bodily control–must be mastered only because the body must not stand in the way of the soul’s expression. The only reason for mastering technique is to make sure the body does not prevent the soul from expressing itself.

I've painted feet on point for a few years now. I've loved painting the strength of the legs against the the perfect balance in the feet. This painting is the largest I've done on the subject and I loved been able to add details and textures I'd have struggled with on a smaller canvas. I wanted to paint just the shoes, still and heavy without the dancer to make them light.

A toe shoe is as eccentric as the ballerina who wears it: their marriage is a commitment.
