A striking sculptural drawing of a Bald Eagle in flight. I tried to recreate the magnificence of this bird at the dramatic moment it is descending and focusing on capturing its prey. Created by twisting, weaving, cutting, bending, curling and straightening wire with pliers, using thick aluminium wire for the main frame and thinner steel wire to form the detail to this beautiful bird of prey.
Its distinctive image has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. The name 'Bald Eagle' derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed".
It casts dramatic changing shadows outside and creates subtle shadows inside in artificial light. The sculpture is treated with clear acrylic lacquer which protects the wire in all weathers, preventing corrosion and oxidisation.
Aluminium wire, steel wire, and clear acrylic lacquer.
