Original artwork description:

‘BAHIA’ is an acrylic painting 28cms x 20cms on canvas paper. It is presented in a white card mount 35cms x 28cms It is part of a series of three studies which take their inspiration from modern and contemporary music. In this case, this series relates to African and Latin cultures. ‘Bahia’ is one of the 26 states of Brazil and is located in the north eastern part of the country on the Atlantic coast. Bahia is the historical and cultural heart of Brazil. As the chief focus of the early Brazilian slave trade, Bahia is considered to possess the greatest and most distinctive African imprint, in terms of culture and customs, in Brazil. These include the Yoruba-derived religious system of Candomblé and African derived music such as samba. The painting tries to capture the energy and spirit of frenetic dance and expression of movement. In this respect every brushstroke, every smear, every drag, every splash is instinctive, gestural and explosive. It is joyful and expressive in its composition.
