One of my favourite paintings in London's National Gallery is Titian's 'Bacchus and Ariadne'. Ariadne is desolate, having been deserted by her lover Theseus, but Bacchus has turned up, in a carriage pulled by leopards, all overflowing cups of wine and more, offering her immortality in the stars if she elopes with him. Tempting offer. But when I think of it at a distance, I think of Ariadne's blue dress, with white shirt and red sash, and those leopards (or are they cheetahs?) pulling the carriage of drunken revellers. This is my more intimate, contemporary take on it.
Highest quality artists' oil paint on heavy Italian linen canvas.
