Description: The Shirahige Shrine, located on beautiful Lake Biwa near Kyoto, Japan is one of the most Zen landmarks I’ve photographed in my travels. The torii (gateway) is said to be responsive to prayer requests for longevity, matchmaking, and prosperity. Making a powerful monochrome photograph is very weather dependent. I had just one precious day in the area and as always, I was dependent on Mother Nature to create some dramatic light. Early in the day the entire area was clouded over, but as the sun rose higher above the horizon, the clouds began to separate, and this magical light began to spill onto the lake’s glistening surface. The silhouette created by the torii and the shadows it cast nearly took my breath away. It was a truly magic moment that I will always remember.
*Hahnemuhle fine art gallery paper, 100% cotton, 308 gsm using archival pigment inks.
