Original artwork description:

Ijzendijke is a picturesque Dutch village in the region of Zeeuws Vlaanderen. It is close to my studio and I have painted it many times – sometimes closeups of buildings and streets, sometimes using its skyline as a backdrop to landscapes. This time, I chose to do a small study of some typical gables in the main square which were particularly attractive as a subject with the autumnal colours of the trees in the foreground. By starting to paint without drawing, I keep the loose, free manner of painting which I strive for, rather that the “drawn from a photograph and then coloured-in” style you so often see and which tends to give a somewhat “stiff” result. Instead, by painting outdoors, spontaneously and without drawing beforehand, I am able to capture that wave of inspiration that first attracted me to the subject. I hope you like it!

This original watercolour painting was painted in the square of Ijzendijke in the Netherlands on 650g, 100% cotton rag, mould-made paper and it comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

Materials used:

650g, 100% cotton rag, mould-made paper
