Aubazine Abbey in Corrèze France. The abbey was constructed in the 12th century and enlarged in the 17th century to accomodate almost 300 monks. An impressive canal (known as : Canal des Moines) was constructed on higher ground, carved from the rock and stretches 1.700metres long, and remains today. The water was used to irrigate the vegetable gardens of the abbey, and provide water for the mills and workshops.
I have visited Aubazine on more than one occasion. This painting is on quality Italian canvasboard (canvas with a wood backing), painted in an impressionist manner, and left to dry for many months before being varnished.
Oil paints (Rembrandt, Old Holland, Winsor & Newton, Gamblin, lefranc & bourgeois)
