Inspired by a mid December afternoon winter landscape. Just as the words “At times like this I miss you ...” were spoken on the car radio I had turned my head to quickly glance south. On the horizon the sky was bright behind some trees but there were a lot of dark clouds with darker trees silhouetted against them.
I was home shortly afterwards and unusually went to work on this piece straight away, although the light was fading. (I tend to start painting in the morning and stop as the evening draws in but I didn't want to leave this to another day as it seemed urgent!) As the image progressed I made the woman's face blend into the land and the sky; I had originally intended for her to be at the front of the image but as it is about memory, her's or someone else's I'm not sure, so I made her recede..
I've used quality Winsor & Newton Artists' Watercolour and graphite on grey Khadi paper. This is a medium-weight handmade cotton Indian paper with a lovely deckled edge. I find that the shade of the paper either mirrors or dictates the mood of the painting that I am working on; in this case I deliberately chose the soft grey.
Available unframed.
Please note that the photographs of the image framed are CGI created to give an idea of size in a room.
