Assynt winter 2 is the second Scottish landscape painting of the mountains of Assynt and Coigach in the far north west of Scotland. Inspired by a television programme of photographer Colin Prior documenting his photography work, one winter in this remote area of the Sutherland and Wester Ross.
I have tried to portray the winter light and atmosphere, of the short winter days, with dark skies laden with snow in the high corries with their small lochans or lochs, usually covered in ice, surrounded by the steep cliffs and rugged rocky hillsides.
Painted in an impressionistic style in shades of cool brown, grey, black and white, with some colourful touches of warmer yellow and magenta in the foreground.
Painted in a contemporary gestural style with a palette knife and fingers.
Painted using quality artists oils on a small square format 8" x 8" (20 x 20cm) canvas, with a gloss varnish finish and white wooden frame with cord ready to hang.
