This print portrays a person who fell victim to 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment, ratified in 1865 after the Civil War and the subsequent abolition of slavery, says: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”, therefore creating a system of 'slavery' by other means.
The print is a drypoint etching created as a chine colle, whereby the etching is printed on top of a thin piece of colour tissue or paper, before becoming fixed to the surface of the fabriano paper.
This image forms part of my ongoing series of works exploring lost generations.
