The saying 'Art is art. Everything else is everything else' was coined by American abstract artist Adolf 'Ad' Reinhardt (1913-1967). Reinhardt, a member of the American Abstract Artists, was an abstract expressionist who wrote and lectured extensively on art and was a major influence on conceptual art, minimal art and monochrome painting. He contended that his infamous 'black' paintings, which comprised black canvasses on which he overlaid many shades of...er.... black, were the last paintings that anyone could paint. He was wrong in this regard, of course, but for committed artists, and art lovers everywhere his most famous saying holds true.
