You see the hunched little figure at the bottom?
For centuries pilgrims have relied on this quaint marker for direction as they dragged themselves along the ancient Via Francigena trail all the way to Rome.
So did we, from just outside Siena - not in pursuit of eternal life but to savour the beguiling beauty of Tuscany.
There was only one problem: This one was the only marker we ever spotted so we were soon hopelessly lost. Thank god for the GPS, the wife intoned. At which point I realised I'd left it behind. And then the heavens opened up, in more ways than one.
