Encaustic is a very ancient technique, dated back in the antique times. If you know about Fayum portraits, they were painted in that technique.
Encaustic is a wax based paint composed of beeswax, damar resin and pigment or oil paint, which is kept molten on a heated palette. It is applied in several layers of combined colors to the surface with brushes and then reheated in order to fuse the paint. Then It can be carved to reveal the underneath colors, scraped, dipped, textured etc.
