This painting depicts the Rio Grande as I saw it a few years ago on my first trip to New Mexico. Standing on the banks of this river, I was taken by the contrast of colors--a turquoise sky, the red mountains rising behind a line of light green trees that were budding with spring leaves. The river was fed by melting snows and the water flowed full to the sandy banks. At night, the desert mountains and river seemed much like what I might see here in my home mountains of Appalachia--the same height of the rising slopes and the shimmer of moonlight on the water. With this painting, I yearned to capture the feeling of my reflection between home and this special place.
