10 little angels painted in a naïve, almost primitive style, is contrasted by a deep sky. Each little angel is painted in oil with a matte finish. The background is built up by many layers of glazing in acrylic color to a gloss finish. These two techniques create the illusion of depth. The angels appear to float above the canvas. Each angel has an individual personality but is unified by the consistent rendering style. The equal negative space that surrounds each angel develops a pattern visually binding the entire work together. This work has a whimsical look at first blush. It is after a second, longer look that the sophisticated handling of composition, style and technique that makes the painting a delightful piece of art.
