This painting was started plein air in late summer in a part of the New Forest called Park Pale. Park Pale refers to a long earth work bank that would have had a paling fence on top to manage the deer for hunting in the 13th century. Sadly, the beech tree fell down a few weeks after I painted it. There were two riders in the distance which gives the painting depth. The sunlight through the leaves gives a dappled light on the foreground. The green mossy roots of the beech contrast with the rich brown leaves. The painting has traditional gold frame with light slip which suits the painting.
