One of my favourite exercises in the figure drawing class is when the model is asked to switch between two different poses which you have to draw simultaneously, often with an interesting motion effect. In this painting I wanted to capture such sense of movement by breaking down a dancer's graceful fall in one continuous gesture. The effect is almost stroboscopic, reminiscent of Gjon Mili's 'stop motion' photographs capturing a sequence of actions in one picture. But the painting also has similarities with Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, one of my favourite modernist paintings.
