This painting is a study on a detail of the masterpiece An experiment on a bird in the air pump by Joseph Wright of Derby, realised in 1768. It has been created for the 3rd year painting class at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin.
The original painting is an oil on canvas measuring 183 x 244 cm, and is part of the art collection of London National Gallery. The original artwork represents a symbolic scene of the Enlightenment, inspired by the science, with a style and setting very similar to religious paintings. The main attraction of this painting, which prompted me to choose it among many other possible studies, lies in the very strong light effect in which the characters are immersed: in a dark room, with only the light of a candle to illuminate the table of experiments, there are very deep shadows which increase the drama and tension of a scene which is already disturbing in itself, because we know that the bird is supposed to die.
The painting on canvas was preceded by a preparatory drawing in graphite of similar size.
Matt final varnish, signed certificate of authenticity.
Oil colors, cotton canvas
