Original artwork description:

This painting was created upon a visit to Amsterdam in 1997. I travelled to Amsterdam for the weekend with some friends to see the Van Gogh museum and all his artwork. On the Saturday evening we walked around the city visiting some bars and we ended up in a Jamaican Bar, where upon we played some pool, drank some excellent beers and I sketched this man sat at the bar.

Upon my return back to Southampton I started this painting, simplifying the image to the man and the bright light in the background. It appeared to me at the time that this man was looking at the light and it came across as a slightly spiritual/ contemplative/ meaning of life image.
